Spooky Savings: Halloween Décor to go batty for

We are officially one week into October, which means it’s time to carve some pumpkins and decorate the crib. However, getting in the spooky spirit can be a little on the pricier side sometimes, especially if you are shopping at a Halloween-themed store. But don’t let those high price tags scare you away!

Whether you are dying to deck out your college dorm room or first apartment, here is a ranked list of some of the cheapest places you can gorge on Halloween décor.

The first on our list if Goodwill. Known for its thrifted clothes and second-hand "boo-tiques", Goodwill actually has a "fang-tastic" Halloween selection for all of their witches and warlocks. With prices starting as low as .99¢, these deals are less of a trick and more of a treat.

Many of these quality Halloween items still have their original tags on them, with prices extending as high as $39.99, like this animated Medusa head available at Goodwill for just $16.99. It’s an eerie good deal, earning a rank of 5 out of 5 skulls!

Other items include but are not limited to:

  • Garlands ($1.29-$3.99)

  • Battery-operated candles ($1.29-$14.99)

  • Ceramic pumpkins (.99¢-$1.29)

  • Decorative lights ($1.59-$5.99)

  • Metallic pumpkins ($1.99)

  • Miscellaneous status (.99¢-$19.99)

  • Foam tombstones ($7.99)

  • Small and large decorative spiders ($1.29-$12.99)

  • Door mats ($6.99)

  • Wooden signs ($3.49)

  • Hanging decor ($1.49-$4.99)

Decorations vary between stores, so make sure you arrive before these items sell out. You’ll find these at the Goodwill on 2550 34th St N in St. Petersburg, FL.

However, before I discovered Goodwill's selection, Walmart had always been my "ghoul-to" for Halloween decorations. Not only are their prices low, but their displays are also wickedly cute. Not to mention, they sell the Pillsbury Dough Ghost sugar cookies that nearly everyone goes batty for.

Though their signs and lights will leave your place looking "fa-boo-lous", their variety is rated 3 out of 5 skulls for their scarce "skel-ection" this year. Prices are reasonable, but one would like more than one aisle to shop from.

Other items include but are not limited to:

  • Creepy fabric and curtains ($2.98)

  • Ice trays ($.98)

  • Plastic pumpkins ($4.98-$14.97)

  • Decorative Lights ($2.82-$8.94)

  • Chain garland ($4.88)

  • Skull or spine candle ($4.88)

  • Miscellaneous figurines ($2.24-$6.98)

  • Wooden signs ($4.44-$5.34)

  • Inflatables ($14.97-$89.00)

  • Tombstones ($4.97-$14.97)

  • Plastic skulls ($1.34-$7.97)

Usually, Dollar Tree or Five Below would take third place for their insanely low prices, but this year they were not as creative, and their options felt a little too tacky, even for Halloween. That’s why this year’s third-place contestant is Target

With squishy felt pumpkins starting at only $1 and hanging decor for $5, this price tag is "un-boo-lievable". Larger pumpkins and plastic gourds are $3, and Halloween-themed pillows are $5.

These items, located in the front value section at Target, often sell out quickly. That’s why it is rated 3 out of 5 skulls for this year’s Halloween décor list. I guess they’re just too cute to spook!

Other items include but are not limited to:

  • Spooky adult and kids socks ($1)

  • Candy dishes ($3)

  • String lights ($3)

  • (2) Dish Towels ($5)

  • Gel window stickers ($2)

  • Garlands ($3)

  • Cauldron candle ($3)

  • Pumpkin buckets ($1)

  • Tablecloth ($6)

  • Paper banners ($3)

Wherever you decide to buy your decorations this year, you’ll give your guests "pumpkin" to talk about. So, keep your spirits lifted during this challenging time, and go trick or treat yourself!
