Shopping at a Distance

Big businesses and grocers are using online grocery shopping to help their customers

adhere to social distancing guidelines while they shop for essential goods.


Publix, Target, and Walmart are promoting the use of their apps and websites as an

alternative for in-person shopping and to prevent crowds of people from shopping at once to slow the spread of the Coronavirus.

Essential shopping or grocery shopping were not one of the industries that were affected by the pandemic.


Households still need to be able to feed their families, clean their homes, wash clothes,

and take care of their pets while still practicing social distancing guidelines provided by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.




While online grocery shopping can be seen also by upper-income adults with annual

household income of $100,000 or greater and who are also full-time employed.


Despite this emerging market, Americans still prefer to buy food in-person.


Gallup News reported 81% of Americans say they never purchased groceries online.

With the pandemic still raging, and several states across the country seeing a rise in

cases, avoiding large crowds is imperative as wearing a mask when it comes to stopping the spread of the Coronavirus.

At the beginning of the pandemic customers were panic buying toilet paper, hand sanitizer, cleaning products, and non-perishable food items.


As the crisis has waxed and waned stores have been able to catch their breath and stock the shelves back up, which makes online grocery shopping a way for shoppers to get all of their essential needs taken care of.


Publix, Target, and Walmart provide services for people to be able to get their necessities as states are still trying to get the virus under control.


Publix uses Instacart, Target drive-up, and Walmart pick-up. Each one has their pros and cons when it comes to shopping experience, user ability, and customer service.


But it is up to you as the consumer on how much you are willing to spend and your preference when it comes to where you shop. What matters is that you are doing your part in helping slow the spread of COVID-19 by avoiding large crowds and social distancing.
