Six savvy date ideas in quarantine

Long-distance dating has taken on a new meaning during the coronavirus era. Couples across the nation are separated due to the government’s push for stay-at-home orders. Being away from your loved ones is difficult, especially when you are unsure about when you will get to see them again. Thankfully, technology allows for many ways to stay connected with your partner, get creative with your date ideas and keep your relationship exciting, no matter how far away you are from each other.

  1. As close as you can get. No matter where you are or what device you have, online video calls are the closest way to be with your partner without physically being with each other. You can even have your friends join in the call and have a group date. From Skype and FaceTime to Zoom and Microsoft Teams, the options are endless.

  2. Traditional but romantic. Sending love letters via snail mail is unusual in the world of technology. However, this method has worked for centuries to connect two lovers who are apart. Along with your heartfelt handwritten letter, you can include items such as stickers, drawings, tea bags, photographs, playlists, or anything that is flat and can be sent in an envelope. The key to a romantic love letter is to personalize it and make it unique for your partner.

  3. Painting with an unusual twist. Using your preferred video call method, do arts and crafts together. You can draw, paint, sew, crochet, do origami, etc. No matter if you are a skilled artist or not, take this time to learn new skills together. Try a medium you never have before and most importantly, have fun.

  4. At the movies, but in your home. There are many online services that allow multiple people to stream the same show at the same time. Netflix Party is one of these streaming options. It is a Google Chrome extension that connects to your Netflix account. The host of the party can invite anyone with a link, and they control the settings. There is also a chat box on the side so you can talk about what is going on in the film. Scener, Rave, Facebook Watch Party and andchill.tv are among others also great options for streaming while separated. Grab your popcorn and get cozy in the comfort of your own home.

  5. An atypical dinner date. Even though restaurant dining rooms are closed, you can still enjoy your favorite meal on a call together. Many restaurants are still offering takeout and delivery options, but if you are looking for more of a challenge you and your partner can try to cook a new recipe.

  6. Making your relationship ‘workout’ in quarantine. It is very easy to stay in bed all day, but with a little motivation from your partner, it is easy to get active. Getting exercise during quarantine comes in many forms. It can be as intense as a workout video or as simple as a walk through the neighborhood.
