Five fun ways to beat the quarantine birthday blues

Updated: May 7, 2020

Everyday a birthday gets celebrated, but what happens when a party can’t be held in the traditional fashion?

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of people are stuck spending their birthdays in quarantine with few people, or by themselves. Luckily, thousands of social media users have stepped forward to share their ideas of fun things to do to help relieve the quarantine birthday blues.

1.Make and decorate your own cake.

To make your party more fun and personal, why not make and decorate your own birthday cake?

Baking a delicious party treat is sure to lift any one’s spirits and fill your stomach with joy. You can choose any flavor combination you want and decorate it as simply or extravagantly as you desire.

Even if you are no cake expert an easy box cake mix, along with some frosting, decorations and a little imagination will make a fun, and possibly hilarious, birthday experience.

2. Go virtual.

The age of endless virtual opportunities is now. If you can’t be with people physically, you sure can be with them digitally.

There are numerous (free) virtual hangout apps and services that will help you connect to your loved ones for a celebration.

Skype, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, FaceTime and many other services are available for you to connect to those near and far.

You could also stream a movie, play online/multiplayer video games, or take part in a virtual experience, such as a dance party, drinking game or online performance if you’re craving human interaction.

3. Do a fun activity.

With a few supplies you can do a lot of fun activities from the comfort of your home.

You can finally cook those Pinterest recipes you’ve always wanted to try, or you can attempt to make your own funky version of modern art.

If you get your neighbors together you can even form a neighborhood window scavenger hunt. Other fun ideas include a personal spa day, online shopping, or creating an at-home pub crawl or hibachi experience.

4. Try fun quarantine trends.

Internet trends have been around for a long time, but now that many of us are stuck at home, what better time is there to try some out?

The TikTok whipped coffee trend only requires three ingredients making it quick, easy and doable for most.

Baking bread may not be for everyone, but you never know until you try. Just remember to follow all the instructions to avoid having to make one of the infamous Twitter fail posts.

There are thousands more TikTok and Twitter trends, so hop online and check out a few.

5. Celebrate like the Queen.

Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her birthday twice a year; once with family and close friends, and a second time with the rest of the population.

If you really want to celebrate a traditional birthday, you can have a fun quarantine day now, and an even better birthday party when the social distancing orders lift.

Who says you can’t have two parties?
