Resident Evil 3 comes back at the perfect time

Updated: Apr 3, 2020

The iconic survival horror series Resident Evil has had a positive resurgence thanks to installments like Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 2 Remake, and the soon to be released remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.

Resident Evil 3 originally launched on the PS1 back in 1999. Just like with its predecessors, Capcom is remaking the game from the ground up for modern consoles.

The game focuses on Jill Valentine, who is one of the survivors of the Spencer Mansion Incident in the first Resident Evil. She is trying to escape the zombie outbreak in Raccoon City which was caused by the Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-Virus.

The Resident Evil series is home to many different monsters such as Hunters, Lickers, and your titular giant spider, but the Nemesis from this installment is arguably the most famous.

The Nemesis is a genetically modified humanoid-beast that was designed by Umbrella to hunt down targets. It is very intelligent unlike the many zombies and mutants you encounter in the games. It is tasked in Resident Evil 3 to eliminate Jill and any remaining members of her team from the first game.

The Nemesis is constantly pursuing Jill throughout the game. Unlike most enemies, you can’t kill Nemesis. You can only cause him to collapse and hope he is down long enough for you to make your escape. This definitely adds to the tension of the game.

That’s why it is important for Jill to constantly collect supplies such as ammo, which are scattered across the tattered remains of Raccoon City, and to be able to craft helpful items such as herb combinations.

Nemesis is similar to Mr. X from Resident Evil 2. They are both created by Umbrella and they both pursue the player with reckless abandon. Nemesis, however, can run after you, use weapons such as a flamethrower, scale buildings, and he can use his tentacle to grab you as you are running.

Raccoon City has been completely reimagined. Jill’s journey will bring her from the neon lit streets of the city to an abandoned donut shop, a hospital crawling with zombies, a subway station that is a refuge for survivors, and beyond.

The over the shoulder perspective from Resident Evil 2 Remake returns to this game. The HUD (Heads-up display) and many of the same game mechanics also return. Jill does have a new dodge move that makes evading enemies a little easier.

The Resident Evil 3 Remake also has a branch new multiplayer mode called Resistance. This is where four people play as survivors while a fifth player plays as a villain character known as a Mastermind.

The Mastermind has the ability to set up different traps and monsters. This player operates all the security cameras on the map. The other four player are meant to escape whatever location they are trapped in. If nobody escapes, the Mastermind wins.

Nobody wins when a real-life viral outbreak occurs. Since many people are practicing social distancing by staying indoors, Resident Evil 3 comes back at the perfect time to keep everybody busy. It launches on April 3rd for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
