Fumbles and scores made in the Super Bowl Commercials

Updated: Apr 3, 2020

With a viewership of 98.2 million people in 2019 and 103.4 million people in 2018, companies depend on the Super Bowl to show their whit, heartfelt moments, and highlight new products featuring celebrities and sometimes simple story telling.

Back in 2017 companies paid $5 million to run a 30-second ad during the game. Outside of viewers entertainment watching them, it is hard to see if the $5 million is worth it unless success is measured in impressions.

Best 5 Commercials 2020:

Sodastream: Who doesn’t love Bill Nye and the idea of water on Mars? Honestly a funny and well-rounded commercial that didn’t reveal the premise until it was the punchline.

Amazon Alexa: Using Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi to talk about the evolution of all the things we depend on Alexa for. Zings towards Watergate and having a dragon makes it one of the best.

Google: TALK ABOUT CRYING IN THE CLUB. This one brings you to reflect on your experiences with someone and be able to relate to remembering things about someone.

T-Mobile: Relatable content, who doesn’t have their mom or even a grandmother trying to let you know whenever something works. Seeing Anthony Anderson's mom letting him know her service works, you can’t help but laugh.

Microsoft: Highlighting the first female coach to coach their team to the Super Bowl. By having the ad feature Katie Sowers, Microsoft defiantly played the game right.

The cost of creating the ads are high for companies, the risks some took this year may cost these companies more. There were some uncomfortable ads including Planters, Mt. Dew’s, and Snickers. These three were hard to follow, just plan weird, or felt unnecessary.
