The Kansas City Chiefs rallied to beat the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 54 by overcoming a ten-point deficit to win their first Lombardi Trophy in 50 years.

All eyes were on the San Francisco’s defense which had been one of the league’s best this past season. They would be up against a high scoring Kansas City offense that was ranked top five in points scored per game.

Through the first two quarters, both teams struggled to put points on the board. Both the Chiefs’ and 49ers’ defense held the other team to only 10 points at halftime.

The 49ers were able to gain momentum towards the end of the third quarter after forcing two turnovers on defense. The offense was able to push the lead up to ten heading into the final quarter of play. After three quarters the score was 20-10 San Francisco.

On a 3rd-and-15 mid-way through the fourth quarter, Patrick Mahomes completed a 44 yard pass to receiver Tyreek Hill. The drive ended as Travis Kelce caught for a touchdown. The 49ers lead was cut to just three, with the score being 20-17.

After a 49ers three-and-out on their next possession, the Chiefs drove 65 yards down the field to take the lead. The touchdown was scored by running back Damien Williams to put Kansas City up 24-20.

In a matter of minutes, San Francisco went from having a 10 point lead in the Super Bowl to being down by four with just over two minutes left to play. The pressure loomed over 49ers quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo as he took the field from his own 15 yard line with 2 minutes left.

After managing to pick up two first-downs, the 49ers faced a 4th-and-10 on the Kansas City 49-yard line. However, the Chiefs’ defense made a stand to force a turnover on downs.

Damien Williams would run 38 yards to score and make the lead 31-20 in favor of the Chiefs. This ended the game after a late interception thrown by Jimmy Garoppolo sealed the win for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Following the win, head coach Andy Reid was awarded his first Super Bowl win as a head coach.

The comeback was led by Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes with 286 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, naming him MVP after the game.
